Is there any way to check a vehicles identity just by the vin number?

DVLA - check for number and who the previous owners

HPI - check for theft, mileage, owners, write off

Porsche - vin check to tell you it's a 924 and it options from new which will tell you it had Lux Pack which 99% of UK cars did.

Not one source gives you all the answers

DVLA won't do a VIN number search-check, (unless you are in the force); need VRM.

But it will confirm the VRM, chassis and engine number and if any changes were logged, when and by whom.

All depends of exactly what you want checked and for what outcome
