Hi guys

My turbo is prepped and ready to paint today. After sanding, the painter called to say he wasn't sure if the original cal was 2 tone (light green/dark green) as the lower half was painted dark green on top of the onyx. (Which was lacquered).

I've attached the original order slip - can anyone help with what colour this car was when it left the factory?

Attached pics of slip, current work and car as I bought and what in plan to respray as. Question is, should it be all that light green and not dark too?

The original order slip clearly shows the two paint codes, Y4 Anari Silver Metallic and Z2 Onyx Metallic. The GN interior trim is Brown Leatherette with Beige Pasha inserts and Brown Carpets.

My guess would be the car was fully painted in Anari Silver Metallic then the bottom half painted over with the Onyx Metallic, I am sure someone will be along to agree or put another point of view.

Correct, as Richard says, the two tone cars shells were painted the top colour first. The lower Onyx Green colour was applied after over the Inari. Therefore your shell should already be Inari Silver throughout. The line between top and bottom needs careful placement so you should look at a few photos and provide your painter with examples prior to application to avoid a non straight line down the body.

Aargh?! So the picture I've added isn't anything like it left the factory?!

Ok. Dilemma moment. Do I go original or just change it to something totally awesome.

It's prepped to paint today.

I want to see what a silver on onyx car looks like now..

ok - done some more research - looks to me like it is 2 tone green.

check out http://www.werk924.com/index.php?option ... &Itemid=63

The car is very original - has original paint, hasn't been resprayed in it's life..

Does this look right to you?

Rich

makes me wonder if the lighter green is simply the onyx (darker) with silver added?

on original paint work of 2 tone cars the step between the lower colour is quite marked, if you take the rubbing strip of and slide your hand across the paint work you can feel the edge that is created through the lower colour being painted over the upper colour. This is hidden by the rubbing strip once they have been fitted, you will also need the tape in onyx green to fit the shadow line (see pics of Richard Kirks car for detailing). The only other comment I can make on this colour scheme is make sure the painter gets the inari colour right, I have seen to many resprayed and the result is far to light, look at the door shuts, inner wings to match up,

Check in the engine bay and under the rear boot carpet, unlikely anyone would do a total respray in and out. If in doubt match it to these areas, nothing worse than inside and outside colours not matching. Of course if you are doing a total in/out respray, doesn't much matter.

Inari silver metallic is a metallic green and it's very green, i assume later shades from VAG are much lighter as that seems to be the trend on resprays.

Onyx green is like brg with a metallic fleck

This is your original colour, i would preserve it but it's your car.

Richards and my car have both had original two tone repaints in the last year. Inari Silver is a light green, not a true silver.
