Yup, 5mm is the MSA minimum spec

I’d actually like a harness and bar set up but, it would prove counterproductive with regards to weight loss.
I take it a harness bar would have to be steel?

I see no reason why a bar shouldn't be alloy as long as it's strong enough. The MSA Blue Book isn't clear about such things.
My harnesses are anchored to the shell, so no harness bar weight involved. I'd still be unhappy with harnesses in a shell with no roll protection though

Hi Mike. Please remind me is this purely a road car, a 'fun' track day car or potential 'event' car where it may be scrutinised, albeit as a road going sports/saloon class than pure race car? Knowing the final outcome of the car may end up with differing scenarios that decide what's needed/not needed. As we have bounced between threads for the NA and S its a little confusing for me what we are trying to help you with, well it is for me. One project thread per car is often helpful as if we forget the objective its easy to go back and review the project in previous posts.

Weight loss should be seen as a collective, not in isolation. You may take weight out in one hand and then be forced add back in the other.

Make sure you take a look at other mounting options in the market. Make sure they are multi drilled so you can tailor the seat location and angles in the car. I bought mounts with limited holes. Spent a day drilling multi holes. Seats were in and out all day trying to get the position right. I had an issue with being too high, too forward and head too close to the roof/A pillar/cage. Once the seat was dropped and tilted to the right position bolting it in/out was a complete PITA!

Original 3 point belts are best for daily use, far less restrictive and safer for road. Harnesses are best for spirited driving, track/hillclimb events as you are pinned into the car, far more restrictive and safer if you hit something hard, but as Nige says, you could incur worse injuries if the shell collapses around you than if you had stock seat/3 point belts. A friend of mine survived a full roof collapse because his upper body was pushed towards the passenger seat and legs remained in the drivers footwell. Had he bin pinned into a hard back seat and harness he would have been decapitated.

Its argued that even having a full cage with stock seats with 3 points is more dangerous than without as the opportunity to hit the hard cage with head and body is far more likely.

Steve has said it all perfectly, if you want a more supportive seat that's fine but run it with the inertia reel belts only, it'll tuck you in on corners for more sportier driving and even foe basic low level sprinting will be fine.
