Spotted in Taunton today, in the Sainsbury's car park. Not very often you see one of these out and about. Looked to be one which is driven often, definitely not a garage queen. Mind you I might have parked it in the empty part of the car park if it were mine... 1957 registration according to MOT history.

Looks suspiciously like a replica, additional engine cover louvres and odd rear lights.

My brother in law and I had the same debate about real or replica. We happened to bump into each other in the car park, remaining a respectable 2m apart of course.

The DVLA MOT database does show it as a Porsche, first registered in UK 31/12/57. It is LHD so maybe imported back then? That makes it at least 63 years old. The teardrop rear lights came in 1956 to replace the beehive lights, but the number plate light is in the wrong place. Entirely possible it is not totally original after all this time. Some car owners do like to make changes to their vehicle so it is no longer as it left the factory. We also know from 924 experience that there is always a chance the factory was clearing its parts bins during a model changeover.

As a comparison, we checked the DVLA for a common replica, Chesil Speedster, and that was registered as a Chesil. If it is a replica, someone has gone to a lot of trouble to give it realistic patina. Still a lovely looking car and I wouldn't mind it in my garage.

Next time in doubt, feel under the edge of the wings, usually fibreglass feel and thickness is a giveaway. Plus a gentle tap on the wings gives a different non metallic sound.

Although to be fair there are few coupe replicas about although available, mostly 356 speedsters.

Looks genuine to me. Lots of little details are correct - horn grill/indicator position, orange bar Porsche badge on front handle, rear reflector position, wing mirror. From the little of the interior that's visible that looks correct too. The shine up rear number plate light is correct as it changed in 1957 from the shine down one.
Looks like they've tried to make it look like a carrera with the wide aluminium strip on the bumpers and 5 louvres either side of the engine grill. The wheels are also wider at 5 1/2" rather than the correct 4 1/4" (a very common mod).

I think everything you need to make your 356 replica appear original is available, particularly in the States, it's a big market.

most people wouldn't know all the little details that varied from year to year though. Many genuine cars have incorrect parts fitted when restored.

Interesting point about the rear lights though, hadn't appreciated the pre A series were different
