There are 23 in total required for the braking system. The ones seen on the brake frame in the picture are for timing applications and as there are 2 types of braking system (air and vacuum) this increases the amount of tanks needed. The timing of the brake application also varies depending on the type of train being driven, frieght or passenger and further complicated if the driver takes their foot of the DSD leading to the brakes applying.

Wow, that is intriguing, looks like that's tonight's late night reading sorted out.

I did some work with Bombardier at one time and remember the incredibly detailed rail regulations that managed to carefully avoid common sense in places.

It is a Davies and Metcalf dual brake system made in Romiley near Manchester
