I do love a nice bogie, once you've shifted them you can breathe so much more easily

My brother was part of the team that designed the sprinter bogies when it was all done In Derby.

I'm guessing either a Class 31 or a 47 but I'm a steam man so I'm guessing

You guessed wrong as it only has 4 axles, it is in fact a class 26 and more importantly the first built so has some history, when I get round to taking some pictures of it I will post here is a you tube snippet of the loco,

I was a small boy in Darlington in the early Sixties a couple of hundred yards from the ECML (as no one called it then), my stepfather and his father and grandfather were railwaymen and I'm a Thompson so steam is in my blood but I well remember the new classes of diesel that were appearing far too frequently for my liking

The unique sound of the Deltics on the expresses and new and very clean D1500s (so new they weren't in the latest ABC) on other passenger trains, Peaks and D200s on freights and what became Class 08 shunters around the freight yards. Long rows of steam engines on the deadline by the Shed (not MPD) waiting to go to the Works mostly for scrapping. Very vivid memories and I wish I could wind back the clock

They were still building diesels at Darlington Works but I don't know if Class 26s were amongst them.

They were built in Smethwick, Birmingham, I think some class 24's and certainly some class 25's were built at the BR works at Darlington, back in the early sixties you may have seen them depart the works new. Thompson is a famous name on the eastern region, designer of the B1 steam loco's, no relation is he,

I'd never given a possible family link a thought until I read a biography of Edward Thompson and I was amazed to find a photo of the house he had lived in whilst he was in charge of the Works and it was in Elton Parade, Darlington, which is the same road, although not the same house, where my grandparents lived.

Edward Thompson and his wife never had any children but his two brothers did so there may be link through them but whether I'll ever find out for sure who knows?
