About
Not a company to rest on its laurels, Porsche began development on a turbocharged version of the 2.0l engine soon after production began. In November 1978 the new 924 Turbo made its debut. With that bullet proof bottom end unchanged but extensive work on the rest of the engine, the Turbo is a very different proposition to an NA.
Explosively powerful the K26 turbo charger initially developed 170bhp in most markets and later S2 versions nearer 180bhp it has a sizeable performance advantage over the NA. In fact, most contemporary Italian supercars would struggle to match its performance figures and, when twisty bits reached, would struggle to know which way it even went!
It is a high performance car. Incredibly fast but, due to many bespoke and highly stressed parts combined with early turbo technology, more of a challenge to keep running well. Good knowledge, patience and mechanical sympathy will reward you with a reliable Ferrari eater.
Production of Turbos ceased in July ’82. Four years that flew by… literally, with a turbo whoosh!
